Paradise B(loss)om

Paradise B(loss)om , 2015. 10" x 10". Acrylic, pencil, on canvas.

With loss of Eden
     - first few lines of Milton's Paradise Lost

1.        These passed, if any pass, the void profound
2.        Of unessential night receives him next,
3.        Wide-gaping, and with utter loss of being
4.        Threatens him, plunged in that abortive gulf.
    - from Book II

MILTON (Memory Loss)

MILTON (Memory Loss), 2015. 10" x 10". Acrylic, gesso, and pencil  on canvas.

1.        So many grateful altars I would rear
2.        Of grassy turf, and pile up every stone
3.        Of luster from the brook, in memory,
4.        Or monument to ages; and thereon
5.        Offer sweet-smelling gums, and fruits, and flowers:
6.        In yonder nether world where shall I seek
7.        His bright appearances, or foot-step trace?

     - from Book XI

Sent from my iPhone 6

Sent from my iPhone 6, 2014. 24"x 36". Acrylic, pencil, charcoal on canvas.

This painting, like a Snapchat pic that lasts only seconds, follows themes of impermanence. The Dutch still-lifes, filled to the brim with frothy blooming flowers reminded the viewer to think on life, because like the fresh petal one day it would dry and turn to dust. I've appropriated the phrase from Basquiat paintings. I also explore ideas of going forward and backward in time - iPhone 6 hasn't been released yet, and its a painting not a pic from a cell phone app, sort of archaic painting content: a flower still life, drawn over in a style resembling Photoshop or MS Paint.

You can buy this painting -here-  Thank you for your support!

Buenas Noches

Buenas Noches, 2013. 12" x 16". Acrylic, gold leaf on canvas paper.

Painted after the death of my Grandfather. I was the first born grandchild and was gifted lots of time and attention from him. He made me spiral bound comic books cut from Sunday papers, creatures made of colorful thread and corn husks. He gave me a desire to learn about culture, discover science, value knowledge. He was a science teacher and had little collections of fossils in painted over cigar boxes. Summers spent at his house in south Georgia make up some of my best childhood memories.

When I was a kid his night time goodbye was, "Buenas noches." Gracias por todo.
